PASS Scores Announced (Related Article/Index Journal)
Abbeville scored above the state average in every subject on every grade level. "Right now we're all very excited," Smith said. She attributed the district's success to hard working teachers who made sure every child was engaged and getting as much out of their lessons as possible.

Spelling Bee Winners at Westwood Elementary
The 3 rd , 4 th , and 5 th graders participated in their school's Spelling Bee. The grade level winners were 3rd: Isabelle S. 4th: Michael Southard, and 5th: Khatera Floyd. The overall school winner was Isabelle S. The Spelling Bee is sponsored by the Anderson-Independent Regional Spelling Bee. Those students are pictured below.

Student Achievement - Dixie High School Band
From Thursday, February 18th - Sunday February 21st the 33rd Annual USC Band Clinic will be held at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina. Rebecca Evans (Flute), John Peyton Bush (French horn) and Kim Bunnell (Bass Clarinet) have been selected to attend this prestigious event to represent the band program and Dixie High School.

Abbeville County School Board Dedication
Dixie High School has given a book The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly in honor of the Abbeville County School Board to the Dixie High School Media Center. A book plate with the words “This book is dedicated to the Abbeville County School Board in recognition of their hard work and commitment to the schools of Abbeville County ” has been placed in the front of the book.

Dixie High School Chorus Students attended SC Central Regional Choir in Clinton, SC on January 28 and 29. The choir was under the direction of Dr. Don Campbell of Southern Wesleyan University. After several hours of rehearsal, the students presented a concert for the public, along with several others choirs from our region.

School Bus Industry Encourages Parents and Children to “Love the Bus”
Abbeville School District to Honor Local School Bus Drivers during February – Parents, students and teachers are celebrating the men and women from Abbeville County School District that take more than 2,750 students safely to schools in Abbeville County each day as part of the fourth annual National Love the Bus program this February.

Hibernation Day at JCCE!
Students in Teresa Jacks' 5k class concluded their unit on hibernating animals by wearing their pajamas to school and bringing along a stuffed animal to “sleep” with – most students brought a hibernating animal.

JCCE Students Participate in State Superintendent's Writing Contest
Fifth grade students at John C. Calhoun Elementary School participated in the State Superintendent's Writing Contest. Elizabeth Paige was the school winner for the essay contest.

JCCE students recognized at Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration in Calhoun Falls
Fifth grade students at John C. Calhoun Elementary School competed in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Writing Contest in Calhoun Falls . They were recognized at the Celebration on January 17 th at the Calhoun Falls Civic Center .

State Superintendent's Writing Award Winners at CTE
Cherokee Trail Elementary class winners for the State Superintendent's Writing Awards Contest in the 5th grade are Shakerra Morgan and Hope Peeler. The school winner is Hope Peeler. Congratulations to these students!

Wright Middle School Student Receives Scholarship
Chelsi Calhoun, an 8th grader at Wright Middle School, has been selected as a Next Generation Venture Fund scholar. This is based on her academic ability and strong personal qualities. Throughout high school, she will receive free benefits to participate in many programs provided by Duke University. These programs include Duke TIP Summer Studies, BizCamp through the Duke University Fuqua School of Business, Kaplan SAT and ACT courses, and ongoing academic and college counseling.

Cherokee Trail Students Help Haiti
Cherokee Trail Elementary students donated $900 to the American Red Cross for Haiti earthquake relief. The Junior Beta Club sponsored “Hearts Out and Hats on for Haiti” in response to a challenge by the National office to all Beta Clubs to reach out to Haiti. CTE students displayed their support for the Haitian people by donating dollars and wearing their favorite hat to school. To date, $45,000 has been raised through various creative projects sponsored by Beta Clubs throughout the country. Westwood Announces December and January Students of the Month
Westwood Elementary School is proud to announce their December and January Students of the Month. The character word for the month of December was Compassion, “Caring enough to do something about someone else's need.” The character word for the month of January was Self-Discipline, “Doing what you need to do so you can grow.”

WRMS 8th Grade Players Recognized
During the basketball game between Wright Middle School and Starr-Iva Middle School, the eighth students that play for Wright Middle were recognized. This was the last home game of the season.

Accelerated Reader Party
Thirty-six Diamond Hill students participated in the Winter Accelerated Reader celebration at Diamond Hill Elementary by meeting their book point and reading average goals. These students received a goodie-bag full of snow-themed items in honor of their reading achievements as well as a special party complete with games and refreshments provided by the Diamond Hill Parent-Teacher Organization.

Author Visit
Carol Crane, author of P is for Palmetto and Net Numbers, recently visited Diamond Hill Elementary School to speak about writing and publishing children's books.  Mrs. Crane has written over fourteen alphabet books about different states and their history.  She encouraged students to keep journals and draw pictures of their life experiences so that they could draw on their memories to write stories and first hand accounts of their adventures.  Mrs. Crane also shared the difficulties in having books published.  Each of her books takes approximately two years to arrive in the bookstore from idea to finished story with illustrations.  During her visit, Mrs. Crane was honored at a school luncheon with the Diamond Hill Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) students.  She admired and critiqued their student-made books and talked about how anyone can be an author if they have a good idea.  Each student at Diamond Hill has the opportunity during the school year to participate in a publishing project, either in a class book or individual book, which are then bound and published just like working authors.

Checkers Championship for AR Qualifiers
Over 74 students qualified for the Accelerated Reader 2 nd quarter celebration at John C. Calhoun Elementary School on January 22nd. Students were treated to a checkers tournament including prizes and refreshments for their outstanding participation in the AR program. Erskine Students visit Wright Middle
During the month of January, seven Erskine College students observed classes at Wright Middle School . They were in ELA, social studies, and PE/health classes. These students are freshmen and sophomores that are considering going into education to one day become a teacher. State Superintendent's Writing Contest
The 8th grade students at Wright Middle School participated in the State Superintendent's Writing Contest. Mirisha Coleman was the school winner for Wright Middle School in the State Superintendent's Writing Contest. These students are the winners from each of the English/language arts classes. Cherokee Trail Goes to Barrier Island
6 th and 7 th grade Beta Club at Cherokee Trail Elementary school enjoyed a Barrier Island trip. They learned all about an estuary, had classes on the beach, enjoyed camp fires, learned to square dance, hiked in the maritime forest, enjoyed team building experiences, played football on the beach, rolled in the mud pit, and went swimming in the estuary.

Roaring Twenties at Cherokee Trail
Fifth graders at Cherokee Trail Elementary School have been studying the Roaring Twenties in Social Studies and famous inventions. In 1913, Henry Ford was able to build one car in less than 3 hours on an assembly line. As a result, he was able to mass-produce a large number of affordable cars. Fifth graders made their own assembly lines and created Model T cars. They learned first hand how you can speed up production when everyone works together.

GATE classes go on a Field Trip
Third thru seventh grade GATE classes at Cherokee Trail Elementary went on a field trip to the Upstate history museum in Greenville . They had a great time learning more about World War II. They saw missiles, guns, and many artifacts from the war. They also dressed like army men and women.

Zoologist Vists Cherokee Trail
Last week, 5 th , 6 th and 7 th grades at Cherokee Trail Elementary School were visited by Mrs. Kanapeckas' daughter, Kim. She is a former Cherokee Trail student, graduated from Dixie High School and Erskine and now she is in South Africa . She is working on her Ph. D in zoology and she talked to us about her research on Cape Buffalo. She impressed us with her experiences and encouraged us to reach our goals.

Wintertime on the Hill
During the recent extremely COLD weather, Diamond Hill had an unusual ice figure to appear on the dock from the faucet.

Mr. Dixie Competition at Dixie High School
The Mr. Dixie competition, sponsored by the Future Business Leaders of America, was held Saturday, January 9, at 7:00 pm, in the Dixie High School gymnasium. Winners were as follows: (Left to Right) Isaiah Lopez, 2 nd Place Sponsor Award; Luke Christie, 1 st Place Sponsor Award, Ruslan Stepchuk, Mr. Senior; Ricky Patterson, Mr. Dixie; Tucker Hilley, Mr. Junior and Mr. Personality; Drew Pearman, Mr. Sophomore; Jake Tollison, Mr. Freshman; Ryan Spencer, Mr. Sub-Freshman.

OOBLECK at Long Cane Primary
Students in Susan Robinson's 2nd grade class at Long Cane Primary recently completed a science unit on solids and liquids. Students made Oobleck and tested its properties to determine if it was a solid or a liquid.

US Naval Academy Midshipman Visits Cherokee Trail
United States Naval Academy Midshipman Bradley Cherry visited Cherokee Trail Elementary School on Monday, November 23, 2009. Midshipman Cherry was a speaker in Mrs. Lynn Patterson's First Grade class. He discussed careers in the military, particularly the Navy.

Long Cane Sponsors Holiday Care Package Campaign For Soldiers
Students, Parents, and Teachers at Long Cane Primary in Abbeville held a collection campaign for a troop of soldiers the school has adopted for this school year. The troop is stationed in Afghanistan . The school was able to send 21 care boxes packed with goodies and handmade greetings to the troop to brighten their holidays. Evelyn Richburg, library media specialist helped to organize the event. Pictures are shown with students and teachers dropping off items in the library and students are shown packing a box for the school's adopted troop.

Terrence Aiken top Accelerated Reader at JCCE honored
Terrence Aiken, 5 th grade student at John C. Calhoun Elementary School , was recognized for his outstanding achievement in reading by Joshua Silcox, Taco Bell Manager, and other employees at the retail location in Abbeville. For being the first student this year to earn over 100 AR points, Terrence was treated to lunch at Taco Bell with principal, David Nixon and media specialist, Nancy Taylor. Chelsea Tillman and Michaela Boozer receive Essay Awards

NATIONAL FFA TO AWARD $2 MILLION IN SCHOLARSHIPS

The AHS Beta Club continues to collect coupons for military families in Rota, Spain.  Please send any unwanted coupons to Joy Brady at AHSThank you for supporting this cause.
