At the Future Business Leaders of America District II Leadership Conference held on Saturday, February 4, at the Lexington Technology Center in Lexington, SC, Dixie High School students were the recipients of numerous district awards.

The Character Word of the month for January was “Self Control”. Self Control is choosing to do what you should do instead of what you want to do. The students were chosen by their classroom teachers for showing the act of self control. Keep up the great work kids!

Long Cane Primary Celebrates the 100 th Day of School
The 100 th day of school was celebrated by Frankie McNair and Shirley Phillips' K4 class at Long Cane Primary School in Abbeville. The children had a wonderful day counting to 100, finding (and eating) 100 Hershey Kisses, and making these colorful hats by adding 100 stickers in groups of 10.
Dixie High School's Miss Emerald Pageant will be February 18 at 7:00 P.M. in Lesesne Auditorium in Due West. General admission tickets are $10.00.
Cast Your Vote!
Second graders at Long Cane Primary in Abbeville have been learning about the United States Government. To enhance learning about the election process and to accompany the SC Republican Primary, they recently held an election of their own. Candidates were Spongebob Squarepants and Alvin the Chipmunk. After registering to vote and campaigning for a candidate, the students voted on Friday, January 27 th . The results were in by the end of the day. JCCE 4K students plant oak trees on campus
Students in Debbie Johnson's 5K class planted oak trees on their campus with Bridget Barber of the Abbeville Conservation District. The hard ground did not stop the students from completing the planting of two oak trees at John C. Calhoun Elementary School in Calhoun Falls . The Energized Guy Visits Westwood
Duke Energy's The Energized Guy visited 4th graders at Westwood Elementary. His mission was to explain how energy is made, and to promote energy conservation and the importance of saving our environment. JCCE home projects on force and motion

Congratulations to Cherokee Trail's December and January Terrific Kids Students were chosen by their teacher because of behavior, effort, and respect. Cherokee Trail's Terrific Kids are sponsored by the Due West Lion's Club and Cherokee Trail's PTO. Parents were invited to a program to see their child honored as they received a certificate, magnet, and pencil.
JCCE Students Explore the Rain Forest
Over the past several weeks, students in Miss Cunningham's GATE/Enrichment Program have been exploring the different layers and foliage of the rainforest. To conclude the unit, they created miniature terrariums and observed how different types of light affect the growth of their plants. Dixie High School Chorus
Eleven Dixie High School Chorus students participated in SC Central Regional Choir at Clinton High School on January 26 and 27. They were among 134 singers from 7 area high schools. The choir was directed by Dr. Don Campbell of Southern Wesleyan University. Featured numbers were Vivaldi's "Gloria", Thompson's "The Last Words of David", "Hold On" by Jester Hairston, Sondheim's "Send In the Clowns" and a Medley of songs from "West Side Story". A concert was presented for the public on January 27 at the Clinton High Auditorium. Dixie High School Chorus is directed by Susan Collins. Donalds' Mayor Visits First Grade
Students in Gail Johnson and Brenda Perry's First Grade learned about "Our Country" and it's officials from the President to the Mayor of their town. Billy Kennedy, the Mayor of Donalds, visited the class to share what he does and how he helps the town. Mayor Kennedy brought brochures for each student showing photos and information about the town.
Dixie High School-Students of the Quarter
Dixie High School recognized their Students of the Quarter for the 1 st nine weeks. Students are chosen by their teacher, based on exemplifying good character traits of a high school student. Students were treated to lunch at Erskine, by their Principal, Lori Brownlee-Brewton.

Historical Research by 1 st Graders at JCCE
Da'Quean Lewis, Jimmy Parton and Madysen Clinkscales explore the life of Abraham Lincoln using an online encyclopedia in the media center at John C. Calhoun Elementary School for their standards based historical research project.
Cherokee Trail exceeds goal of a ton of food during annual food drive
Cherokee Trail Elementary donated 2276.2 pounds of food and $234 to local needy families and charitable organizations during the Annual Mathematical Food Drive sponsored by the Jr. Beta Club. Cherokee Trail Elementary students learned math while helping others as they counted pounds and explored math concepts through hands-on activities related to the cans, bags, boxes, and dollars donated. This year's drive was a battle of the genders competition that culminated with a physical challenge of fun games pitting the gals against the guys. The girls came out on top for the drive with 51% to 49% in food donations. The guys won by just a few points in the physical challenge games. Overall, CTE had a great time, learned a lot, and gave generously during the ninth annual mathematical food drive.
A Field Trip Comes to Westwood!
Captain Sadler's Living History Camp came to visit the 4th graders at Westwood Elementary School. The students have been studying Colonial America in Social Studies. During the field trip, students pretended to live in the year 1770. They were engaged in a variety of activities, such as playing with American toys, writing with quill pens, wearing colonial clothing, visiting a one room school house, and wristband making. Westwood Elementary held a food drive during the month of November. Thanks to the generosity of the students, parents, teachers and staff, they collected 1,085 non perishable food items and donated them to a food bank in Abbeville County . Way to Go Westwood!

The Character word for the month of December was “Generosity”. Generosity is making someone's day by giving something away. Winter Celebration Program
Second Graders at Long Cane Primary in Abbeville performed a Winter Celebration Program. The students sang Winter Songs and preformed original dialogue written by Tyler South. Second graders and Mr. South did a super job! Tyler South is Long Cane's substitute Music Teacher. Morgan Hanna, Long Cane's Music Teacher helped plan the program.
SC TRAC is a web portal designed to improve college course transfer and articulation in the state. The system assists students by providing online tools that make it easier to transfer academic credit and evaluate how higher education course work will transfer among South Carolina's public colleges and universities. It is particularly useful to high school students who are taking dual credit, Advanced Placement, and/or International Baccalaureate courses as they can benefit tremendously by using the site to help plan their post secondary course work.
Underage Drinking Survey - Cornerstone Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission and the Abbeville County Coalition for a Healthy Community have received a grant to implement underage drinking prevention activities in Abbeville County. The first step in this process is to gain information about the prevalence of the problem and to assess the needs of the County. As a result, Cornerstone and the Abbeville County Coalition are asking that you complete an anonymous survey to generate information from the community about the problem. |
